Cancellation of CP+
The CP+ trade show was the first chance that the public would have had to get their eyes on the EOS R5, but due to the COVID-19 or coronavirus outbreak, the trade show was cancelled for health and safety reasons.
First Images of the Canon EOS R5
Luckily, the EOS R5 was on display at the Wedding & Portrait Photography Intl. or WPPI in Las Vegas that took place this week. Digital Photography Review was there to inspect the unit in person.

It will again be on display at The Photography Show in Birmingham, UK, running from 14-17 March 2020.
RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1L IS USM and Extenders
Canon UK also mentioned that
The recently announced EOS R5, RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1L IS USM lens and new extenders will be making an appearance at the show

The RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1L IS USM and its extenders were revealed with the EOS R5 and will probably be launched concurrently.
Release Date
Sadly, there is still no word about an official release date, but rumours suggest it will be in July 2020. This will give photographers just a little bit of time to accustom themselves with this mirrorless video monster before the Olympic and Paralympic Games taking place from 24 July to 9 August and from 25 August to 6 September respectively.

What a week for camera releases. First Logitech released its StreamCam, then Nikon’s D6 was unvailed and now Canon has its new video powerhouse on its way. Read my articles on the StreamCam and the D6 to get up to speed.
It’s Official
Canon Global revealed that the full-frame EOS R5 mirrorless powerhouse is officially in development, together with the RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM.
In total, nine lenses will be released during 2020. Let’s hope all of them see the light before the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.
Video
Being the first Canon mirrorless to feature 8K video, they had to get it perfect. The R5 may have the ability to shoot in 8K and downsample the footage to a crisp 4K video. Canon states that this is possible through a
newly developed CMOS sensor

IBIS
Stabilisation is an important feature, especially in cameras and lenses that can get heavy after a while. Canon developed their In-Body Image Stabilisation (IBIS) and rather than only having Image Stabilisation (IS) in the lens, it’s a combined fight against vibrations with the IS and IBIS working in sync.
Speed
The EOS R5 boasts of 12fps using the mechanical shutter and up to 20fps with the electronic one, aimed especially at sports photography.
What we Know Thus Far
Confirmed Specs
We are fairly sure of the following:
- 8K video at 30fps
- 4K video at 60 and 120 fps
- Dual Card Slots
- Continuous shoot: 12fps mechanical and 20fps electronic
- IBIS
Rumoured Specs
These are still in the dark:
- 45MP full-frame CMOS sensor
- Scroll wheel at the back
- WiFi at 5GHz, built-in
- Same-shape battery as EOS 5Ds Mark IV, but longer-lasting and with new internals
- No touch bar, rather the scroll wheel
- Toggle between live view and movie mode
Price and Availability
Canon will be at the CP+ photography show starting on the 27th of February 2020. Whether we will get more information or see a prototype there is still a mystery. Rumour has it that the R5 will be released in July 2020.
Pricing for the EOS R5 will probably be in the $3,500 (R52,016.30*) range competing with the Nikon Z7 with 45.7MP or maybe the Sony Alpha A7R IV with 61MP.
