The good news just keeps coming. South Africa’s internet problem could be lightened sooner than we expected.

Ship Status

It looks like the Leon Thevenin has a very private, introverted and withdrawn personality. The latest position update received was on www.vesselfinder.com on the 2nd of February 2020 at 21:27 (GMT+2) and its last check-in on www.martinetraffic.com was on the 27th of January 2020 at 01:07 (GMT+2).

Repair

According to Openserve, the Chief of Mission on board the Leon Thevenin said that “unfavourable conditions” was the reason for the change of the initial plans.

Currently, the first of three repairs is off the coast of the Congo on the WACS cable. This cable has the largest capacity of the two cables that were damaged in January 2020, which means most of our capacity will be restored soon.

If you are interested in where the cables run and connect to the continents, follow this link to see an interactive map of current and projected cable systems.

Timeline

The WACS cable repair is set to finish two days earlier than originally planned and the Leon Thevenin will hopefully be able to leave for the SAT3 repair as soon as tomorrow, the 6th of February 2020. This second repair is roughly 2000km north-west from the current WACS repair, off the coast of Ghana. Estimated time of repair completion is 17 February 2020, but it all depends on the weather.

Thereafter, the ship will leave to the second break in the SAT3 cable which is not official but is off the coast of Gabon, near Libreville, as initially reported. This repair is forecasted to be finished on the 25th of February 2020, again depending on the weather.
