Gaming on a Mac? Excuse me? What universe is this? Apple has never focused on gaming hardware for its notebook or desktop range. With the recent release of Apple Arcade, the company showed some interest in the gaming world, but will the e-sports community consider buying a Mac for gaming?

Hardware

The main question at this stage is whether Apple will release a large laptop or an all-in-one desktop Mac. A laptop would be great for casual gamers who want to work and game on the same computer and want the option to game anywhere. The desktop version will probably attract more serious gamers who would want expansion options and do not mind packing up all of their hardware to go over to a fellow gamer’s house for a LAN party.

Speaking of expansion, what are the chances of Apple releasing an upgradable computer? Chances are there, because of the move back to expansion options with the newly released Mac Pro, which you can read about here. Expansion is very important for gamers who want or need specific hardware for particular purposes. It also gives them the option to add or replace only one component if needed. Unfortunately, there is no news on any hardware specifications thus far.

Next question is whether the desktop version will include peripherals such as a gaming mouse and keyboard and perhaps a screen? Knowing Apple, it would probably be a complete package, but we will have to wait and see.

Mac vs PC

The PC has for a long time been the preferred choice for gamers. There are some major differences between the two. Mac doesn’t give you the freedom to customise. The upgradable Macs that are available, only gives you the option to upgrade memory and storage, where the PC has the option to upgrade any component, from the CPU to the graphics card right down to even the power supply. Pricing also needs to be considered. The price of a Mac with the same specs as a PC is usually much higher.

Price

Rumours suggest a R70,000 or $5,000 price tag, which is close to the base model Mac Pro, released in December 2019. If the price does include a monitor and other peripherals, the specs for the hardware might still be well above your average gaming computer.

Release

We assume that the possible release will take place in July 2020 at Apple’s annual WWDC event. There is also a chance that it will be released at an April event, but new releases usually take place at big events.

Closing

Whether you are a serious or casual gamer, the release of an Apple gaming computer will be received with mixed feelings. Let’s see if and what Apple brings to the table.
