Remember we talked about the Mac Pro that shipped beginning of January this year? Its horizontal partner is now available for purchase.
Differences
There are only three big differences: no option to choose between wheels or feet, horizontal box and oh dear, price.
I went through Apple’s page where the Mac Pro Tower and Mac Pro Rack are sold and the options for specs are identical. Read my article on the Mac Pro and all, yes I mean all available upgrade options with pricing in Rand (R) and Dollar ($).
Pricing
Tower
I maxed out the Mac Pro Tower specs and landed at R874,150 or $60,245.98 on that day. This pricing includes the Pro Display XDR but excludes the 8TB storage option that wasn’t available at the time.
Rack
The starting price for the rack version is R7,184.80* or $500 more expensive standing at R93,388.03* or $6,499.
Then I maxed out the Mac Pro Rack, just because, you know, I had to. To make it fair I used the 4TB option and included the Pro Display XDR and Pro Stand. The only thing missing now is the stainless steel wheels.
The Rand has strengthened against the Dollar since then and it maxed out at R847,147.59* or $60,345.98.
Subtract the R7,184.80* that makes the Rack version more expensive from the R847,147.59* and you get R839,962.79* for the Mac Pro Tower.
Using the Dollar pricing there is only a $100 difference but that’s only because of the stainless steel wheels. The actual difference is exactly $500.
Shipping is free and takes 1-2 weeks.
Closing
The rack version will be a perfect fit in a studio or server room where the Mac Pro won’t be moved at all. Other than that, happy spending!
